Rest the injured area
Apply a cold pack for 10 to 20 minutes at a time during the first 24 to 48 hours
Repeat cold compresses several times a day
Elevate the bruised area if possible
Use a light compression wrap if swelling is present
Switch to warm compresses after 48 hours if needed
Take acetaminophen for pain if appropriate
Avoid aspirin or ibuprofen if bleeding is a concern
Protect the bruise from further injury
Seek medical care if the bruise is very large, very painful, or appears without cause
