Wash your hands and the area around the splinter with soap and water
Sterilize a pair of tweezers and a needle with rubbing alcohol
Soak the area in warm water for 10 to 15 minutes to soften the skin
Use the needle to gently lift the skin if the splinter is just under the surface
Grasp the exposed end of the splinter with the tweezers
Pull the splinter out slowly in the same direction it entered
Wash the area again with soap and water
Apply antiseptic or antibiotic ointment
Cover with a clean bandage if needed
Seek medical help if the splinter is deep, under a nail, in the eye, or cannot be removed easily
