Apply a cold compress for 10 to 20 minutes at a time during the first 24 to 48 hours
Use a wrapped ice pack, frozen peas, or a cold spoon
Repeat every 1 to 2 hours while awake
Keep your head elevated
Rest and avoid activities that could worsen the injury
After 48 hours, switch to a warm compress for 10 to 20 minutes at a time
Use acetaminophen for pain if needed
Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen in the first 24 hours if there is swelling or bruising from injury
Do not put pressure on the eye
Do not blow your nose if there may be facial injury
Seek medical care if you have vision changes, severe pain, blood in the eye, worsening swelling, double vision, vomiting, loss of consciousness, or signs of a fracture
Seek urgent care if the black eye followed a serious hit or possible concussion
Cover the bruise with makeup only after the skin is not broken and swelling has gone down
