How To Grow Potatoes In A Container?

Choose a large container with drainage holes

Use a container at least 10 to 15 gallons in size

Fill the bottom with 4 to 6 inches of loose potting mix

Use certified seed potatoes

Cut large seed potatoes into pieces with at least 1 to 2 eyes each

Let cut pieces dry for 1 to 2 days before planting

Place seed potatoes on top of the soil with eyes facing up

Cover with 3 to 4 inches of soil

Water thoroughly after planting

Keep the soil evenly moist, not soggy

Place the container in full sun

Add more soil as plants grow, leaving the top leaves exposed

Continue hilling until the container is nearly full

Feed with a balanced fertilizer during the growing season

Check regularly for pests and disease

Harvest new potatoes after flowering if desired

Harvest when foliage turns yellow and dies back

Empty the container and collect the potatoes

Cure harvested potatoes in a cool, dark, dry place

Store potatoes in a cool, dark, ventilated area
