Turn off the water supply if needed
Remove the overflow plate screws
Pull out the overflow cover and linkage
Insert a tub drain wrench or drain key into the drain crossbars
Turn the drain counterclockwise to loosen it
Lift the drain out once it is free
If stuck, apply penetrating oil and wait
Use a hair dryer to warm old plumber’s putty if needed
Clean the drain opening after removal
