Trim the fur around the hot spot carefully
Clean the area gently with saline or diluted chlorhexidine
Pat the area completely dry
Prevent licking, chewing, or scratching with an e-collar
Apply a vet-approved topical treatment if directed
Keep the area clean and dry
Check for and remove fleas or other parasites
Wash bedding and clean the dog’s environment
Avoid using alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, or human creams
Contact a veterinarian if the hot spot is large, painful, smelly, oozing, or not improving within 24 to 48 hours
