Measure the door opening and select a pocket door frame kit sized for the door slab
Check the wall for plumbing, electrical, and structural obstacles
Remove the existing drywall on the wall where the pocket door will go
Remove the existing door, trim, and framing in the opening
Install the pocket door frame according to the manufacturer’s instructions
Add the header and track assembly
Install the split studs and pocket wall framing
Verify the frame is plumb, level, and square
Run any necessary electrical or plumbing reroutes before closing the wall
Hang the door slab on the rollers
Adjust the rollers so the door slides smoothly
Install the door pull, latch, and edge hardware
Add drywall to both sides of the pocket wall
Tape, mud, sand, and finish the drywall
Install casing, trim, and any stop molding
Test the door for smooth operation and proper alignment
