Wash and scrub the potato
Dry the potato thoroughly
Pierce the potato several times with a fork
Rub the potato with a little oil if desired
Sprinkle with salt if desired
Place the potato directly on the oven rack or on a baking sheet
Bake for 45 to 60 minutes, depending on size
Check for doneness by inserting a fork or knife; it should slide in easily
Remove from the oven
Let it cool for a few minutes
Slice open and serve with desired toppings
