Fill a large bowl or sink with cold water
Separate the collard green leaves
Remove any damaged or yellow leaves
Cut or tear off the tough stems
Submerge the leaves in the water
Swish the leaves around to loosen dirt
Lift the leaves out of the water
Pour out the dirty water
Repeat with fresh water until no grit remains
Rinse each leaf under cold running water
Shake off excess water
Pat dry with a clean towel or use a salad spinner
