Graduate from high school with strong grades in biology, chemistry, and math
Earn a bachelor’s degree (or complete required prerequisite coursework)
Complete a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program (typically 3 years after prerequisites)
Meet admission requirements for DPT programs (prerequisites, GPA, observation hours, and required tests such as GRE if applicable)
Gain hands-on experience through physical therapy observation hours and/or assistant/aide roles
Complete required clinical education rotations during the DPT program
Pass the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE)
Apply for state licensure in the state where you plan to work
Maintain licensure by meeting continuing education requirements
Consider board certification or specialty training (optional) through recognized PT specialty programs
Build professional experience through employment in clinics, hospitals, outpatient settings, home health, or sports/rehab programs
Obtain any additional certifications relevant to your practice area (optional)
