Chain 4
Join the chain with a slip stitch to form a ring
Chain 3 to count as the first double crochet
Work 2 double crochets into the ring
Chain 2 to make the first corner
Work 3 double crochets into the ring
Chain 2
Repeat the sequence of 3 double crochets and 2 chains two more times
Join with a slip stitch to the top of the starting chain 3
Fasten off or continue with a new color
Join yarn in any corner space for the next round
Chain 3
Work 2 double crochets into the same corner space
Chain 2
Work 3 double crochets, chain 2, and 3 double crochets in each corner space
Work 3 double crochets in each side space
Join with a slip stitch to the top of the starting chain 3
Repeat rounds until the square reaches the desired size
Weave in all ends
Block the square if needed
