How To Reseed A Lawn?

Mow the lawn to a short height.

Rake the area to remove dead grass and loosen the top layer of soil.

Aerate the lawn (core aeration) if possible.

Remove thatch buildup (no more than about 1/2 inch).

Test soil if needed and amend based on results (add compost or appropriate fertilizer).

Spread seed evenly using a broadcast or drop spreader.

Use the correct seed-to-soil contact approach (lightly rake seed into soil).

Apply a thin layer of topdressing or compost to cover seed lightly.

Water immediately after seeding.

Keep the top 1/4 to 1/2 inch of soil consistently moist until germination.

Water in short, frequent cycles during germination (avoid runoff).

After germination, gradually reduce frequency and increase depth of watering.

Avoid foot traffic until seedlings are established.

Apply starter fertilizer only if recommended for your grass type and within label rates.

Control weeds carefully after seedlings are established (use label-approved products).

Mow when grass reaches about 3 to 4 inches, cutting only the top 1/3.

Reseed bare spots first, then overseed the full lawn if needed.

Repeat overseeding in the proper season for your grass type if coverage is still thin.
