Fill a bowl or glass with enough cold water to fully cover the egg
Gently place the egg into the water
If the egg sinks and lies flat on its side, it is fresh
If the egg sinks but stands upright on the bottom, it is older but still may be usable
If the egg floats, discard it
Remove the egg and dry it after testing
