Check the paint type: latex (water-based) or oil/solvent-based
Read the label for disposal instructions and hazardous waste warnings
Do not pour paint into drains, storm sewers, or onto the ground
Do not put liquid paint in regular trash unless the local rules allow it
If latex (water-based) paint
Use up leftover paint for touch-ups or donate if still usable
Keep the lid off and let small amounts dry out in a well-ventilated area or follow local “drying” guidance
Mix with an absorbent (cat litter, sand, or paint hardener) until fully solid
Dispose the solidified paint in regular trash if allowed by local rules
Dispose empty, fully dried paint cans in regular trash if allowed
If oil/solvent-based paint
Do not let it dry out at home
Take leftover paint to a household hazardous waste (HHW) facility or scheduled collection event
Keep paint in its original container with the lid tightly closed for transport
Store containers upright, labeled, and away from heat and ignition sources until drop-off
If you have paint thinner, solvents, or turpentine
Do not pour into drains
Store in closed, original containers
Take to HHW for disposal
If you have paint sludge or dirty cleanup water
Do not dispose down the drain
Let solids settle if permitted locally, then take residue to HHW
Follow HHW facility instructions for contaminated materials
Aerosol paint and spray cans
Use up the contents if possible
Take partially full or unidentifiable cans to HHW
Recycle empty cans if your local program accepts them
Aerosol primers/paints with flammable propellants
Treat any partially full cans as hazardous
Bring to HHW
Empty cans
Ensure no liquid remains
Follow local rules for recycling vs trash disposal
