Press and hold the test button on the smoke detector until the alarm sounds
Listen for a loud, clear alarm
Test each smoke detector in the home one at a time
Use the test button monthly
Replace the batteries if the alarm is weak or does not sound
Replace the entire detector if it fails to sound after new batteries are installed
Use a smoke detector test spray if recommended by the manufacturer
Check interconnected alarms to make sure all units sound when one is tested
Clean dust from the detector before testing if needed
Replace smoke detectors according to the manufacturer’s recommended lifespan
