How To Hang Shelves?

Choose shelf location and mark the height on the wall

Find wall studs using a stud finder

Mark stud centers with pencil

Decide shelf bracket style (L-brackets, cleats, or rail systems) and confirm compatibility with shelf size and load

Hold each bracket against the wall at the marked height

Level the bracket and mark the screw hole locations

Pre-drill pilot holes into studs

Attach brackets to studs using appropriate screws

Check brackets are level and aligned with each other

If installing a backer board or cleat, cut it to size and secure it to studs level with the layout marks

Place the shelf on or onto the installed brackets/cleat

Secure the shelf to brackets (or cleat) using the manufacturer’s fasteners

Confirm the shelf is level and stable

If required for extra safety, install anti-tip or safety brackets into studs behind or through the shelf

Use a level to verify the final shelf position before loading
