Choose shelf location and mark the height on the wall
Find wall studs using a stud finder
Mark stud centers with pencil
Decide shelf bracket style (L-brackets, cleats, or rail systems) and confirm compatibility with shelf size and load
Hold each bracket against the wall at the marked height
Level the bracket and mark the screw hole locations
Pre-drill pilot holes into studs
Attach brackets to studs using appropriate screws
Check brackets are level and aligned with each other
If installing a backer board or cleat, cut it to size and secure it to studs level with the layout marks
Place the shelf on or onto the installed brackets/cleat
Secure the shelf to brackets (or cleat) using the manufacturer’s fasteners
Confirm the shelf is level and stable
If required for extra safety, install anti-tip or safety brackets into studs behind or through the shelf
Use a level to verify the final shelf position before loading
