Open the Excel file
Go to **File** → **Info**
Select **Protect Workbook**
Choose **Encrypt with Password**
Enter a password in **Password**
Re-enter the password in **Confirm Password**
Click **OK**
Save the workbook
To remove protection: **File** → **Info** → **Protect Workbook** → **Encrypt with Password** → clear the password → **OK** → save
