Determine whether you need a passport book, passport card, or both
Gather proof of U.S. citizenship, such as a certified birth certificate or naturalization certificate
Gather a valid government-issued photo ID
Get a passport photo that meets U.S. Department of State requirements
Complete Form DS-11 if applying for a first passport, a child passport, or replacing a lost or stolen passport
Do not sign Form DS-11 until instructed at the acceptance facility
Find a passport acceptance facility in Virginia, such as a post office, clerk of court, or public library
Make an appointment if the facility requires one
Bring the completed application, citizenship proof, photo ID, passport photo, and payment
Pay the required fees for the passport and execution fee
Apply in person if required
If applying for a child under 16, bring both parents or provide notarized consent and required documents
Track your application after submission
Receive your passport by mail
Renew by mail with Form DS-82 if eligible, or apply in person with Form DS-11 if not eligible
