Gather supplies: cat nail clippers or nail grinder, treats, towel or blanket, flashlight (optional), styptic powder (or cornstarch) for bleeding, and a calm surface
Choose a good time when your cat is relaxed (after eating or during a quiet period)
If needed, have a second person gently hold the cat and provide comfort
Handle one paw at a time; gently press behind the toe to extend the nail
Trim only the clear, hook-shaped tip; avoid the pink area (quick)
Take small trims if you’re unsure of the nail length
Check each nail and stop if the cat becomes stressed or struggles
If you cut too close and bleeding starts, apply styptic powder immediately and apply gentle pressure
Reward your cat with treats and praise after each nail or paw
Keep sessions short (especially at first) and gradually increase the number of nails as your cat adjusts
Trim front nails more often than back nails if needed (follow your cat’s growth and scratching habits)
Clean clippers/grinder after use and store everything safely out of reach
