How To Become A Nun?

Research the type of religious life that fits you (contemplative, active service, missionary, cloistered, diocesan, or order-based)

Contact local convents/communities to ask about their vocation process

Attend an information session, retreat, or scheduled visit if offered

Talk with a vocation director or spiritual director

Begin regular prayer and spiritual practices (Mass, Liturgy of the Hours, confession, adoration if appropriate)

Meet regularly for discernment conversations

Meet basic requirements of the community you’re considering (age, education, health, background, and any specific criteria)

Prepare for initial stages such as candidacy/aspulantate/postulancy (varies by community)

Submit required paperwork and documentation requested by the community

Receive guidance on community rules, prayer schedule, and expectations

Demonstrate commitment through service, obedience, and participation in community life

If invited, enter the next stage of formation (postulancy/candidacy/novitiate, depending on the community)

Complete the novitiate formation period if required

Study the community’s charism, theology, vows, and rules

Live the community’s schedule and participate in apostolic work appropriate to the community

Make temporary vows if the community requires them and you discern a call

Continue formation, evaluation, and spiritual growth during temporary vows

Make final (perpetual) vows if invited and you discern a lasting call

If at any point you discern you’re not being called, communicate promptly with the vocation director

If you already belong to a religious order, follow that order’s specific process for discernment and vows
