Cool the area under cool running water for 10–20 minutes
Gently wash with mild soap and water
Apply petroleum jelly or aloe vera gel
Do not pop blisters
Cover with a clean, nonstick bandage if needed
Take over-the-counter pain relief if appropriate
Avoid direct sun exposure on the burn
Use sunscreen after the skin has healed
Do not apply ice, butter, toothpaste, or oils
Do not pick at peeling skin
Seek medical care for deep, large, blistering, or infected burns
Seek urgent care if the burn affects the eyes, lips, or breathing
See a dermatologist for persistent dark marks or scarring
Use silicone gel or scar sheets after the skin has fully healed
Consider prescribed treatments for post-burn discoloration if needed
