Have the person sit quietly for 5 minutes with feet flat on the floor and back supported
Use the correct cuff size
Place the cuff on the bare upper arm, level with the heart
Wrap the cuff snugly above the elbow
Locate the brachial artery in the inner elbow
Place the stethoscope over the brachial artery
Close the valve on the inflation bulb
Inflate the cuff until the pulse disappears, then 20 to 30 mmHg more
Slowly deflate the cuff at 2 to 3 mmHg per second
Listen for the first tapping sound and note the pressure as systolic BP
Continue deflating until the sounds disappear and note the pressure as diastolic BP
Record the reading as systolic over diastolic, in mmHg
Repeat after 1 to 2 minutes if needed and average the readings
Measure both arms on the first check if possible
