Sit or lie down immediately when vertigo starts
Keep your head still and avoid sudden movements
Focus your eyes on a fixed object
Drink water if you may be dehydrated
Rest until the spinning stops
Avoid driving, climbing, or operating machinery during symptoms
Limit alcohol and caffeine
Get up slowly from sitting or lying positions
Try vestibular rehabilitation exercises if recommended by a clinician
Use the Epley maneuver for BPPV if instructed by a healthcare professional
Take prescribed medicines for nausea or vertigo as directed
Treat the underlying cause, such as ear infection, migraine, or low blood pressure
Seek medical care if vertigo is severe, recurrent, or persistent
Seek emergency care if vertigo occurs with chest pain, fainting, weakness, trouble speaking, severe headache, or vision changes
