Rinse your mouth gently with cool water
Apply gentle pressure with clean gauze or a clean cloth if bleeding

Keep the lip clean with mild soap and water around the area
Apply petroleum jelly or a lip balm to keep it moist
Avoid licking, picking, or biting the lip
Eat soft, cool foods and avoid spicy, salty, or acidic foods
Avoid hot drinks and alcohol
Take over-the-counter pain relief if needed and if safe for you
Watch for signs of infection such as increasing redness, swelling, pus, or fever
Seek medical care if the cut is deep, won’t stop bleeding, or the edges are separated
Seek urgent care if there is a tooth injury, severe swelling, or trouble breathing or swallowing
