Turn off the circuit breaker
Verify power is off with a voltage tester
Remove the outlet cover plate
Unscrew and pull the receptacle out of the box
Identify the wires
Connect the black or red hot wire to the brass screw
Connect the white neutral wire to the silver screw
Connect the bare or green ground wire to the green screw
Tighten all terminal screws securely
Fold the wires neatly into the electrical box
Mount the receptacle back into the box
Reinstall the cover plate
Turn the breaker back on
Test the receptacle for proper operation
