Add 2 to 3 tablespoons of oil to a large pot with a lid
Heat the oil over medium heat
Add 2 to 3 popcorn kernels to the pot
Cover the pot and wait for the test kernels to pop
Add about 1/2 cup popcorn kernels in an even layer
Cover the pot again and gently shake it occasionally
Remove the pot from the heat when popping slows to 2 to 3 seconds between pops
Let it sit covered for 30 seconds
Transfer the popcorn to a bowl
Add salt or other seasonings if desired
