How To Build A Retaining Wall?

Check local building codes and permit requirements

Call utility locating services before digging

Measure the wall length, height, and layout

Choose the wall type and materials

Mark the wall outline with stakes and string

Excavate a trench below frost line if required

Make the trench wide enough for the base and drainage

Compact the soil at the bottom of the trench

Add a layer of crushed stone or gravel for the base

Level and compact the base material

Set the first course of blocks or stones perfectly level

Check alignment and level in all directions

Add drainage pipe behind the wall if needed

Place drainage gravel behind the wall

Backfill in layers and compact each layer

Stagger joints for each additional course

Use construction adhesive or pins if required by the system

Keep the wall slightly stepped back if designed as a setback wall

Install geogrid reinforcement for taller walls if needed

Continue building to the desired height

Cap the wall with capstones or finishing materials

Finish grading the soil to direct water away from the wall

Inspect the wall for level, alignment, and stability
