Rest the knee and avoid activities that worsen swelling
Apply ice for 15–20 minutes at a time, several times a day
Compress the knee with an elastic bandage or knee sleeve
Elevate the leg above heart level when possible
Use over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medicine if safe for you
Reduce weight-bearing and avoid high-impact exercise
Do gentle range-of-motion exercises if pain allows
Use crutches or a cane if needed to limit pressure
Wear supportive footwear
Seek medical care if swelling is severe, sudden, painful, red, warm, or follows an injury
