Wash your hands and the area with soap and water
Clean the skin and splinter with rubbing alcohol or antiseptic
Use clean tweezers to grasp the exposed end of the splinter
Pull the splinter out slowly in the same direction it entered
If the splinter is under the skin, sterilize a needle with alcohol
Gently lift or open the skin over the splinter tip with the needle
Use the tweezers to remove the splinter
If the splinter is deeply embedded, soak the area in warm water first
After removal, wash the area again with soap and water
Apply antiseptic or antibiotic ointment
Cover with a clean bandage
Watch for redness, swelling, pus, or increasing pain
Seek medical help if the splinter is deep, near the eye, or cannot be removed easily
Seek medical help if you have signs of infection or your tetanus shot is not up to date
