How To Cook Mussels?

Rinse the mussels under cold running water

Scrub the shells and remove the beards

Discard any mussels with cracked shells

Discard any mussels that are open and do not close when tapped

Heat a large pot over medium-high heat

Add butter or olive oil

Add chopped garlic, shallot, or onion if desired

Add white wine, broth, or water

Bring the liquid to a simmer

Add the mussels to the pot

Cover the pot with a lid

Cook for 5 to 7 minutes, shaking the pot occasionally

Remove the mussels as they open

Discard any mussels that do not open after cooking

Add herbs, lemon juice, or seasoning if desired

Serve immediately with bread, pasta, or fries
