Trim excess fat from the pork shoulder
Season the pork shoulder with salt, pepper, and desired spices
Optional: sear the pork shoulder in a hot pan before slow cooking
Place sliced onions, garlic, or other aromatics in the slow cooker
Put the pork shoulder into the slow cooker
Add a small amount of liquid such as broth, water, apple juice, or barbecue sauce
Cover and cook on low for 8 to 10 hours or on high for 5 to 6 hours
Cook until the pork is very tender and reaches an internal temperature of 195°F to 205°F
Remove the pork shoulder from the slow cooker
Let the pork rest for 10 to 15 minutes
Shred the pork with forks
Mix the shredded pork with the cooking juices if desired
Serve warm
