How To Cite MLA With Multiple Authors?

Two authors: list both authors in the order they appear in the source, with the first author’s name inverted

Two authors in Works Cited: Last Name, First Name, and First Name Last Name

Three or more authors in Works Cited: list the first author followed by “et al.”

Three or more authors in in-text citation: use the first author’s last name followed by “et al.”

In-text citation for two authors: include both last names joined by “and”

Example in-text citation for two authors: (Smith and Jones 45)

Example Works Cited entry for two authors: Smith, John, and Jane Jones. Title of Work. Publisher, Year.

Example Works Cited entry for three or more authors: Smith, John, et al. Title of Work. Publisher, Year.

If the source has an organization as author, use the organization name as the author

If no author is listed, begin the Works Cited entry with the title

Keep MLA formatting consistent with italics, quotation marks, and punctuation as required by the source type
