Put on rubber gloves
Turn off the toilet water supply if the bowl is close to overflowing
Remove excess water with a cup if needed
Use a plunger with a good seal over the drain opening
Push and pull the plunger firmly several times
Flush to check if the clog is cleared
Repeat plunging if necessary
Use a toilet auger if the plunger does not work
Insert the auger into the drain and turn the handle to break up the clog
Flush again to test the flow
Add hot water and a small amount of dish soap if the clog is minor
Wait a few minutes, then try plunging again
Avoid using harsh chemicals
Call a plumber if the toilet remains clogged
