Soak the affected foot or finger in warm water for 15 to 20 minutes, 3 to 4 times a day
Dry the area thoroughly after soaking
Gently lift the nail edge with clean dental floss or a small piece of cotton if it can be done without pain
Apply an antiseptic or antibiotic ointment if the skin is broken
Wear loose-fitting shoes or open-toe footwear
Trim nails straight across, not too short
Avoid cutting or digging into the corners of the nail
Avoid repeated pressure or trauma to the area
Use over-the-counter pain relievers if needed
Keep the area clean and dry between soaks
See a doctor if there is severe pain, swelling, pus, spreading redness, fever, or if you have diabetes or poor circulation
Get medical treatment if the nail keeps growing into the skin or does not improve
