Plan the patio size and shape
Check local codes and property lines
Call utility marking services before digging
Gather materials and tools
Mark the patio outline with stakes and string
Remove grass and soil to the required depth
Compact the subgrade
Install landscape fabric if desired
Add and level a gravel base
Compact the gravel in layers
Add a layer of bedding sand
Screed the sand smooth and level
Lay the pavers in the chosen pattern
Cut pavers to fit edges and corners
Install edge restraints around the perimeter
Spread joint sand over the pavers
Sweep sand into the joints
Compact the pavers again
Add more joint sand and repeat if needed
Clean the surface
Check for level and proper drainage
