Determine whether you need a passport book, passport card, or both
Complete Form DS-11 if applying for a first-time passport, for a child under 16, or if your previous passport was lost, stolen, or damaged
Do not sign Form DS-11 until instructed to do so by the acceptance agent
Gather proof of U.S. citizenship, such as a certified birth certificate, naturalization certificate, or previous U.S. passport
Gather valid photo identification, such as a driver’s license or state ID
Bring a photocopy of the front and back of your ID
Obtain one passport photo that meets U.S. passport requirements
Pay the required passport fees and any execution fee
Apply in person at a passport acceptance facility in Michigan, such as a post office, county clerk office, or library
Find an acceptance facility using the U.S. Department of State passport facility search
Bring all required documents and fees to your appointment or walk-in visit
Take an oath and sign the application in front of the acceptance agent
Track your application status online after submission
Request expedited service if you need the passport sooner
