Follow your dentist’s post-extraction instructions exactly
Avoid smoking or vaping for at least 48–72 hours (longer is better)
Avoid using straws for at least 48–72 hours
Don’t spit forcefully or rinse aggressively for the first 24 hours
Keep the extraction site clean as instructed; gently rinse with prescribed or recommended mouthwash after 24 hours
Brush teeth gently, avoiding the extraction site for the first day
Eat soft, cool or lukewarm foods for the first 1–2 days; avoid crunchy or sharp foods
Keep the head elevated when resting for the first 24 hours
Limit vigorous activity for the first 24–48 hours
Avoid touching or probing the socket with fingers, tongue, or tools
Take prescribed pain medication on schedule to avoid delayed care and overuse of irritating actions
Consider asking your dentist about chlorhexidine mouthwash if you’re at higher risk
If you were given a medicated dressing or irrigation instructions, use them exactly as directed
Contact your dentist immediately if pain becomes severe or worsens after 2–4 days, or if you see exposed bone or have an unpleasant taste or odor
