Scrub the potato under running water.
Pat dry.
Pierce the potato several times with a fork.
Rub the potato lightly with oil and sprinkle with salt (optional).
Place the potato on a microwave-safe plate.
Microwave on high:
Small potato (6–8 oz): 4–6 minutes
Medium potato (8–10 oz): 6–8 minutes
Large potato (10–12 oz): 9–12 minutes
Turn the potato halfway through cooking.
Check doneness by squeezing gently (it should give) or inserting a fork (it should slide in easily).
Microwave additional 30–60 seconds if needed.
Let stand 1–2 minutes.
Cut a slit lengthwise and fluff the inside with a fork.
Add toppings (butter, sour cream, cheese, chives, salt, pepper).
