Gather ingredients: pie crusts, apples, sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, butter, and lemon juice
Preheat the oven to 425°F
Peel, core, and slice the apples
Toss the apples with sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and lemon juice
Place one pie crust in a pie dish
Add the apple filling to the crust
Dot the filling with butter
Cover with the second pie crust or make a lattice top
Trim and crimp the edges
Cut slits in the top crust if using a whole crust
Brush the top with milk or egg wash if desired
Sprinkle with sugar if desired
Bake for 15 minutes at 425°F
Reduce the oven temperature to 350°F
Bake for 35 to 45 minutes more until the crust is golden and the filling is bubbling
Let the pie cool before slicing
