How to Become a Paralegal in California?

Earn a high school diploma or GED

Complete a paralegal education program approved by the American Bar Association or a postsecondary program with paralegal coursework

Meet California paralegal education requirements under Business and Professions Code Section 6450

Complete one of the following:

Earn a paralegal certificate from an ABA-approved program

Earn an associate degree in paralegal studies or a related field

Earn a bachelor’s degree in any subject plus paralegal studies coursework

Complete at least 24 semester units in paralegal studies from an approved school

Gain at least one year of law-related experience under attorney supervision if qualifying through experience-based pathways

Complete at least one course in legal ethics

Complete at least one course in California law if required by your program

Work under the supervision of a licensed California attorney

Do not provide legal services directly to the public without attorney supervision

Use the title “paralegal” only if you meet California’s statutory requirements

Maintain continuing legal education if required by employer or certification program

Consider voluntary national certification through organizations such as NALA, NFPA, or NALS

Apply for paralegal positions at law firms, corporations, government agencies, or nonprofit organizations

Keep records of your education, coursework, and work experience

Stay current with California legal and ethical requirements
