Place the brats in a pot or saucepan
Add enough water, beer, or a mix of both to cover the brats
Bring the liquid to a gentle boil
Reduce to a simmer
Cook the brats for 10 to 15 minutes
Check that the internal temperature reaches 160°F
Remove the brats from the liquid
Optional: brown them in a skillet, on a grill, or under a broiler
Serve immediately
