Call utility locating services before digging
Mark the wall layout with stakes and string
Measure the wall length, height, and setback
Choose suitable cinder blocks or concrete retaining wall blocks
Gather gravel, crushed stone, landscape fabric, drainage pipe, and mortar if needed
Excavate a trench below frost depth if required
Dig the trench wide enough for the base and drainage
Compact the subgrade thoroughly
Add a layer of crushed stone or gravel for the base
Level and compact the base material
Set the first course of blocks on the base
Check each block for level and alignment
Adjust blocks as needed before continuing
Stagger joints on each successive course
Use construction adhesive or mortar if required by the block system
Install drainage pipe behind the first course
Wrap the drainage pipe in filter fabric if needed
Backfill with clean gravel behind the wall
Place landscape fabric between soil and gravel
Compact backfill in layers as you build
Add geogrid reinforcement if the wall height requires it
Keep the wall slightly stepped back if the design calls for it
Cap the top course with cap blocks or coping stones
Secure caps with adhesive
Grade the soil behind the wall to direct water away
Finish with topsoil and landscaping as desired
Inspect the wall for level, drainage, and stability
