Choose shed location and confirm property lines, zoning, and setbacks
Select shed size and style (prefab vs custom)
Create a simple site plan and layout measurements
Decide foundation type (concrete slab, pier blocks, skids, or treated base)
Prepare the site: clear vegetation, remove topsoil, level ground, compact base material
Install a foundation system
Set anchor points and ensure the base is square and level
Build or install the shed base frame using pressure-treated lumber
Install floor joists and subfloor (pressure-treated where needed)
Frame the walls: build wall panels on sawhorses or assemble in place
Install wall panels plumb and square, fasten to base frame and each other
Add corner bracing and temporary diagonal bracing
Frame the roof structure (rafters/trusses), verify overhangs and alignment
Install roof sheathing
Install roofing underlayment and roofing material (shingles/metal)
Install fascia and trim
Install doors and windows (or rough openings before sheathing/finish)
Add wall sheathing/board siding substrate as planned
Install housewrap or weather-resistant barrier (if applicable)
Install exterior siding
Install interior wall sheathing and insulation (if climate-controlled)
Install vapor barrier (if insulating)
Run electrical (if needed): plan circuits, outlets, lighting, and route wiring
Install electrical fixtures and connect to a safe power source (licensed electrician if required)
Install plumbing (if needed): water supply, drain, and vent planning
Install flooring finish (if desired)
Caulk exterior seams and penetrations
Install gutters and downspouts (optional)
Add ventilation (ridge vents, soffit vents, or wall vents)
Treat and seal exposed wood surfaces (stain/paint appropriate for exterior)
Inspect fasteners, alignment, and weatherproofing
Finalize landscaping: grade away from shed, add gravel perimeter if desired
