Choose untreated, weather-resistant wood
Cut a wooden box with a floor, back, sides, and roof
Make the box about 12 to 18 inches tall
Make the interior about 8 to 10 inches wide and deep
Cut an entrance hole about 3 to 4 inches wide
Place the entrance near the top of the front panel
Add a hinged or removable roof for cleaning
Drill small drainage holes in the bottom
Drill small ventilation holes near the top sides
Sand all edges smooth
Avoid using paint, stain, or toxic sealants
Mount the house on a tree trunk or sturdy pole
Place it 10 to 30 feet above the ground
Face the entrance away from strong wind and rain
Secure the house firmly with screws or straps
Add nesting material such as dry leaves or shredded paper
Check the house periodically and clean it when empty
