Use your most recent Handicap Index if you still have one
If your handicap has lapsed, enter new scores into your golf association’s handicap system
Post at least 54 holes of scores to establish an initial Handicap Index
Use the best 8 of your most recent 20 score differentials to calculate your Handicap Index
If you have fewer than 20 scores, use the number of scores required by your system’s adjustment table
For each round, calculate the score differential using:
Score Differential = (Adjusted Gross Score – Course Rating – PCC) × 113 ÷ Slope Rating
Use adjusted gross score, not raw score
Apply any maximum hole score limits required by the rules
Use the correct tees and course ratings for each round
Recalculate after every new acceptable score is posted
If returning after a long break, expect your handicap to change quickly as new scores replace old ones
If your system allows inactive or old scores to remain, follow the official revision rules for your region
Check your national golf association’s handicap calculator for the exact current method
