Use the formula: Torque = Force × Perpendicular distance
Write it as: τ = F × r
If the force is applied at an angle, use: τ = r × F × sin(θ)
Measure force in newtons (N)
Measure distance in meters (m)
Measure torque in newton-meters (N·m)
Find the distance from the pivot point to where the force is applied
Find the angle between the force direction and the lever arm
Multiply force by the perpendicular distance, or by r × sin(θ)
Use the right-hand rule to determine torque direction
Positive torque is usually counterclockwise
Negative torque is usually clockwise
