Turn off the power to the outlet at the breaker box
Verify the power is off with a voltage tester
Remove the outlet cover plate
Unscrew the outlet from the electrical box
Pull the outlet out gently
Take a photo or note where each wire is connected
Loosen the terminal screws or release the back-wire connections
Disconnect the wires from the old outlet
Inspect the wires for damage or corrosion
Connect the wires to the new outlet in the same positions
Tighten the terminal screws securely
Reattach the outlet to the electrical box
Install the cover plate
Turn the power back on at the breaker
Test the new outlet with a plug-in tester or device
