How To Wire An Outlet?

Turn off power at the breaker and verify the outlet box is de-energized with a non-contact voltage tester

Remove the existing outlet cover and outlet device (or confirm the new box is properly installed and secured)

Check for proper grounding in the metal box or grounding conductor in the cable

Identify cable conductors: hot (typically black), neutral (typically white), and ground (typically bare/green)

Connect the black (hot) wire to the brass screw terminal on the outlet

Connect the white (neutral) wire to the silver screw terminal on the outlet

Connect the ground wire (bare/green) to the green ground screw on the outlet

If there are multiple cables, connect like wires together using wire nuts (black-to-black, white-to-white, ground-to-ground) before attaching to the outlet, or use the outlet’s specified pigtails method

Use pigtails when required: attach wire-nut connections for each conductor group, then connect pigtails to the outlet terminals

Ensure all wire connections are snug, with no loose strands, and that wire insulation is not under the screw terminals

Tuck wires neatly into the box without pinching

Install the outlet device into the box and tighten mounting screws

Attach the cover plate

Turn power back on at the breaker

Test the outlet with a receptacle tester (correct wiring, ground, and polarity)
