Gather charcoal, lighter fluid or a chimney starter, matches or a lighter, grill tools, and food

Open the grill vents

Remove the cooking grate

Add charcoal to the chimney starter or pile it in the grill

Light the charcoal

Wait until the coals are covered with gray ash

Pour the hot coals into the grill if using a chimney starter

Arrange coals for direct or indirect heat

Replace the cooking grate

Preheat the grill for a few minutes

Clean and oil the grate

Place food on the grill

Close the lid if needed

Turn food as needed

Dispose of ashes safely
