Rinse raw rice thoroughly
Soak the rice in water for several hours
Drain the rice completely
Dry the rice until moisture is removed
Heat a heavy pan or wok
Add a small amount of sand or salt if using traditional method
Roast the rice over high heat while stirring constantly
Wait for the grains to puff up
Remove the puffed rice immediately
Sift out any unpuffed grains or debris
Cool completely before storing
